Meditation is a way of getting familiar with your spiritual side. It is actually the union of your mind, body and spirit. As a society, we have moved far away from our spiritual sides and it’s time to get back to reconnecting with this important aspect of ourselves. After all, our spirituality is one of the things that separate us from all other creatures.

How to meditate properly is the question most people ask.

As it happens, meditation can be performed in a variety of ways and in fact there are many types and schools of meditation. There is a spectrum of methods and beliefs about meditation, and you can discover many wonderful variations and philosophies along with a long list of potential positive results.

Close Your Eyes

To begin any meditation method, you must learn how to close your eyes and block out the external world. Distractions such as dogs barking outside, lawn mowers, the television and other noises can break you out of a meditative state so these must be blocked if you’re going to meditate properly. Blocking out these types of noises can be done in a variety of ways. You can play soothing music, you can play one of those noise makers that plays sounds such as the rain or you can drown out outside noise by repeating a mantra. Note taht when you improve your ability to meditate, tehre will come a point where outside noises no longer bother or affect your ability to center and calm yourself.

Mantras

Many meditation methods involve repeating mantras, which is saying - aloud or in your head - a word or sound over and over to induce a meditative state. This can be a simple OM sound or it can be a phrase, such as, “I am relaxing”. Use the words to center your focus on the rhythm of your breathing. This meditation method is very popular as it not only drowns out outside noise but it also allows you to clear your mind as you focus on the word or phrase spoken.

Clear Your Mind

In order to meditate properly no matter what meditation method you choose, make sure you clear your mind of mental chatter. You can’t meditate if you’re worried about work, or family, or your financial status. In the world of meditation, none of this matters. In fact, the paradox is that once you learn to let go ofthe mental chatter you will better be able to cope with your daily worries.

Meditating is about becoming connected with your spiritual self, and to get in touch with that side you must turn inwards and dissolve physical reality. This is the key entry point and goal of all meditation methods you may learn about, and developing your ability to shut out the physical world will bring you many mental and physical benefits.

You may wish to experiemnt with different methods and teachers of meditation, and find a method or combination which works for you. As you learn and become more self-aware, you may seek even more knowledge and find that new methods of meditation are working for you. Always go with the flow - your higher self knows what you need!

Whatever meditation method you choose, remember that meditation has many benefits, and stick with it long enough to see results. Do not worry if you cannot concetrate at first. You will find that it is not about concentrating at all, but in letting go. Meditation can heal you, both physically and mentally, it can energize you, it can calm and relax you and, above all, the various meditation methods can help you find enlightenment in these often troubling and tumultuous times.
